Definition and causes

The normal newborn babies lung is relatively rigid and has a small luftindhold. This means that the child easily have difficulty breathing, also called "respiratorydistress"(RD). Lungeblærerne found a substance called surfaktant, which is vital to that lungernes luftudveksling can take place, as surfaktanten help lungeblærerne to remain open. The amount of surfaktant depends on lungernes maturation, so that the prematurely born children have too little of it. The lack of surfaktant makes lungeblærerne have a tendency to collapse after the birth of more surfaktanttab and shortness of breath to follow, that is a vicious circle. Tilstanden, as the self, called Respir

The risk of RDS increases, the sooner the child is born. It is common in children with a birth weight of 2.5 kg or less. Komplikationen are also quite common in large Children born of mothers with diabetes (see Diabetes and pregnancy ).

Symptoms of the RDS

A few minutes after birth can detect the first signs of RD. There are rapid breathing (over 60 times per minute), and by inhalation withdraw the thorax is inwards instead of outwards, as usual. By breathing out you can hear a gryntelyd. The child may have a bluish color as a sign of too little oxygen.

Consideration of RDS

RDS is a very serious condition, because it can cause brain damage because of lack of oxygen. Usually you fødselslægen or midwives, even before birth started, calculate the risk for the development of RD of the newborn, and the treatment deployed immediately after birth. When you expect a premature birth, we can measure the amount of surfaktant in the fetus lungs by taking a fostervandsprøve (see Special tests during pregnancy ).

If surfaktantmængden is too low, you can raise it by giving binyrebarkhormon. This can not be too close to birth, when the product is 24 hours of work.

For prematurely born babies and children who may be affected by disruptions in respiratory function, nursed in an incubator for the first time after birth. Respiration can be maintained as necessary with the respirator and artificial surfaktant can be injected from the outside in the form of fine droplets in indåndingsluften. The review continues, the child can breathe himself. Current checked the blood of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other substances.

Forecast at the RDS

The treatment of RDS has been improved significantly with the introduction of surfaktant in indåndingsluften. Children who are born very premature (born before 28 weeks pregnancy) or very small (weighing less than 1500 grams), still have a significantly higher risk of RDS, because their internal organs are not fully developed.
